Bar code systems are designed to Track, Trace, Count, or Identify your:

Products, Equipment, Parts, Files, Shipment, Work Orders, Furniture, People

Your application will define your software requirements and the software along with your environment will dictate your bar code hardware specifications.

DSI can help design a solution for your application. Use our interactive Create a Solution tool to get an estimate of what a simple solution would entail. For more complex requirements, such as a full Warehouse Management System, check out the ROI Worksheet and please Contact Us.

Asset Managment

“Fixed Assets” in your business include computers, desks, chairs, phones, laptops, monitors - any other furniture or equipment used by a business. Typically a business takes inventory of their fixed assets once or twice a year, and it’s often a tedious process. Bar coding allows the item location to be easily updated if they are moved, and significantly speeds up the time to take an asset inventory.

Equipment required for Fixed Asset Tracking includes portable handheld terminals, preprinted bar code labels or label printer and label printing software, the PC Workstation that retains the database and Asset Tracking Software.

Inventory Control

Inventory is often a company’s largest investment, and the requirement to accurately account for it is critical to a business’s financial health. By using bar coding to track inventory, a company will dramatically speed up the time to count inventory, will improve the accuracy of their inventory transactions (up to virtually 100%) and reduce the labor hours required to manage the inventory.

The software required for an inventory control system may be a part of the company’s accounting/ERP system or a stand-alone application. Most up-to-date bar coded inventory systems use wireless handheld terminals to update an inventory database in real time.

Bar code equipment required for an Inventory Control System includes portable handheld terminals (typically wireless), and/or forklift mounted terminals (always wireless), the access points to manage the data between the wireless terminals and network servers, and bar code label printers.

Compliance Labeling

Compliance Labeling is the process of labeling outbound shipments following the specific requirements of your customer. These requirements might include the positioning of the information on the label and/or on the box, providing a bar coded purchase order number or bar coded part number on the label, etc. Major retail companies such as Sears, Target and Walmart have compliance labeling requirements, as do automotive manufacturers, airplane manufacturers and the Department of Defense.

The equipment to produce a compliant label includes Label Design Software on a PC Workstation and a bar code label printer.

Document Tracking

Document and records management is important for labs, engineering companies, attorneys, doctors, work in process documents in manufacturing - any company who needs to know the location of a file or document. The tracking system works by identifying a location or person by scanning a locator (or badge) bar code and a bar code on the file or document. The locator or badge can represent a person, department, work station, room – any place that might have the document or file.

The equipment required for this application can include a wedge bar code scanner (connected to a workstation), a portable handheld bar code terminal, preprinted bar code labels or a label printer and label printing software, and specialized Document Tracking software.

Warehouse Management

A Warehouse Management System helps boost productivity, reduce costs, shorten order fulfillment times and increase customer satisfaction. A WMS system tracks all activity in a warehouse, from receiving through shipping. Features of a full system include:

  • Receiving
  • Putaway
  • Inventory control
  • Kitting
  • Picking
  • Shipping
  • Order management
  • Reporting

Warehouse Management Software comes in a wide range of capabilities and price. If your requirements are more than simply “inventory control”, Contact Us

Tool Check In/Out

Specialty tools can be expensive and are often easy to misplace. Tool tracking software turns your toolroom into a library, where tools are checked in and out to a person, department, workstation, vehicle, etc. Some features of a bar code tool tracking system include allowing for classifications of tools (high value, low value, expendables), a complete audit trail, tickler dates for tool returns, reservation, and more.

Requirements for the solution include a wedge bar code scanner at a PC Workstation or a handheld bar code terminal, preprinted bar code labels or a label printer with label design software, and specialized Tool Check In/Out software running on a PC Workstation.
